Him

Previous / Next

I do not know his name, but he`s always walking around in our neighborhood. One day, I was sitting outside our building, watching Kaja riding her bike, he came over to me. He looked at my camera (while I snapped away), and looked at Kaja and her bike. Then he told me this story:

When the Germans invaded Norway in 1940, he and his friend decided to escape to Sweden. They used their bikecycles, and went out in the middle of the night. Today we can reach the border in about an hour if we use a car. I guess they may have used 6-8 hours on a bike on dirt roads in 1940. When they figured they were near the border, they hid their bikes behind an old shed, and ran into the woods. The next day, they were safe in Sweden, and they stayed there till April 1945 when the Germans left. They bought a train ticket to Moss, and walked from the station and home to their house. Everything looked like it did when they left. Except next to the stairs were their bikes. And to this day, he doesn`t know how they got there.

... strange, moving story, fine photo ...

Thanks, anon!

Wonderful picture, and fantastic story...

The photo is excellent. I don't mind the light leak, the exposure is right on where it matters. The background is in focus, which usually makes more difficult to separate the subject, but here the different light makes the trick. In fact having the background in focus gives a contest for the man.

Recently in the photoblogs.org mailing list there was a discussion about adding descriptions to the photos, or not. Somebody said that a photo should stand by itself and the comments are superfluous. That person was clearly wrong. Here the photo stands by itself, but at the same time reading the story in your post gives to it a whole new dimension which would be otherwise lost. I like photoblogs that have text alongside the photos.
